Tag: application

A very interesting word! it means the use of something, or putting it into use. And yet, we find it an appropriate word to use also for the letter we write to others when asking for being taken into consideration for a job, a grant, a scholarship, or various other things. “To apply” is to add something or ask for being taken into consideration, but “to apply to” means being relevant, or valid, for – such as a low that can apply to you or not, or apply to a specific situation, or not. Somehow, people see a connection between “valid”, “request”, and “putting onto use”, effectively by associating all of these words with some kind of activation – of a product, a person, or such abstract topics like social capital.
